Red Dog

Today, I share with you a project from a short time ago.

I painted this Labrador dog in acrylic paint as part of a larger project, which didn't exactly work out so well... mainly because I spent most of the time on the painting- which I feel turned out pretty well, what do you think?

I am not the most skilled painter, but as I work at my technique- I am always studying the old masters. I say this because I work to make my process as similar to the traditional style of painting developed and proven by the old masters and so many after them.

Here's the "neutral" underpainting to establish the dark-light values and get all the shapes in their general place. In these steps I used a mix of Liquitex Naphthal Crimson and Burnt Sienna, as well as some Artist's Loft Brilliant Red. I should have started more "neutral" (i.e. brown) in this stage, allowing the colors that I'd apply in the future layers to come through better, and use less red, but it's all good.

Once the underpainting is worked in, which can stay somewhat "sketchy" for now because the next few layers are more about refining those initial shapes and values, I start to refine the form more accurately and to begin the application of some of the base color/s; in this case- the red tone.

Next, once I'm happy(ish) with the shapes and the values here, I start to add some lighter colors/values. Liquitex Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light Hue, and Artist's Loft Deep Yellow were all used in some capacity through these lighter stages.

Also, after the first two progress shots in the below image, I added a red glaze layer all over the painting to try and deepen the red color throughout the piece, then added more yellows into the lighter parts of the dog.

Next I reestablished the darkest areas (under the ears, nose, and eyebrow) to get a wider value scale to work with between the lightest light and the darkest dark, using a combination of Liquitex Raw Umber and Artist's Loft Brilliant Blue.

The blue color(s) were mixed with Liquitex Bright Aqua Green, Turquoise Deep, and Ultramarine Blue (Green Shade). Honestly, I should have used more of the Artist's Loft Brilliant Blue in these blue mixes also or instead of the Ultramarine- but the colors are so close, and I'd used these three colors to mix a color similar to the one that I wanted, in the past, so I stayed with what I knew worked... in the future I will always push that to make better decisions when mixing colors, both on the palette and in the painting.

After the dark is dark enough, I begin to work up through the values, moving from dark to light, shape-by-shape, value-by-value to build up the forms on the face of the dog. I gradually work up to the lightest light, which is not quite white out-of-the-tube white, in fact- I make it a point to never use paint straight out of the tube and to always mix my colors using at least two colors of paint; this way none of the colors are so plain, like crayons, and they work better together when placed next to other colors in the piece because they all have a little bit of each other in them.

This pup will be for sale on ebay later tonight, so if you are interested- check back a little later for a link to where you can bid on it. Thanks for looking, more coming soon.

I like Markers

Here are some 'marker renderings' that I completed
for school assignments a few years ago.

Hot Rod Marker

This first job was to draw a car... as you could probably tell.

This one was chosen to be on 'The Year's Best' poster, they put it right in the center, that was pretty sweet.

Prismacolor markers, white gel pen for some of the white highlights, and a little colored pencil work to bring out some of the reflections a little better.

This one here is of Hunter S. Thompson, obviously.
I was a little shocked when my teacher didn't know who he was...

H.S.T. markerThe requirements for this job stated that there must be space for two full paragraphs of text, while 50% of the whole spread was to be taken up by a face, and had to include a heading and subheading.

This one was fun, I liked trying to
imitate Ralph Steadman's ink splatters
with the markers.

Oranges For this, I was only bound by three rules.

There had to be:

-Food
-A Chrome/Metallic surface and,
-Glass

The idea behind these 'marker renderings' was to be able
to provide a client with a colorful sketch of the image(s) in
mocked-up concepts in a short amount of time...

So- all of these were done on a restricted time limit.
I did some practice first, before I started the drawings so that I had some sort of
a sense of how to get a believable effect on some of the more difficult
surfaces, but once I started the finished piece I was on clock-watching duty.

Say 'hi', Sly!

So... this is my first blog post.
Yes... Ever... So forgive me, for I am sure to slip on this.

Okay, so I have the face on the book, which I don't use, and one of those Tumblr things (http://slythemongoose.tumblr.com/) , but there's so much garbage to sift through on there, and it really just doesn't feel good to me to use... I have a Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sly_the_mongoose/) that I haven't used in months, probably over a year... so I don't use them, for one reason or another, the idea of them became boring for me.

Anyhoo, here's the reason for all of this nonsense. Recently I upgraded from a 'stoopid phone' to a 'smart phone' *oooohahhhh... whatever... but just about the only good thing(s) about that is that it has a pretty nice camera on it, and I could get an Instagram(@slythemongoose). While that may sound weird to start off with, hear me out.

I found a few visual artists on this app, who use it fairly regularly, and had some really cool inspiring stuff... then I started finding more and more cool people, who probably don't even consider themselves artists, calligraphers, crafters, photographers, etc... I was inspired by all of these 'normal' people, who were just like me... To make a long story short - I realized that most of the stuff that I do just to entertain myself, could (with a little more energy and attention added into it) possible turn into something that people might like... I sort of realized that I was being selfish... I should share more of these things with a greater audience... and that there's not a mountain of difference between your favorite illustrator, artist, etc. and yourself.

So in an attempt to share more about what's going down 'round here, I created this blog page... It gives me more room to rant, and a lot of the people and 'artists' that I have found on Instagram have a blog here as well, so it's sort of convenient for me in a number of ways to make this blog... besides that - images look so much better on a screen that's larger than an android :/

What is to come in the future:
- I will be uploading some of my artwork, some doodles, and other miscellaneous nonsense (I've been pretty deep into learning calligraphy recently, so- I'm sorry in advance if there is an abundance of that soon :/)
- Also, I will be delving into the experimentation(s) I have undertaken recently, as well as the process(es)
- I will do my best to make a post regularly with new material(s)... We'll see how well I do with that (haha)

... this will probably bore most, and if so - please, feel free to tell me that... express yourself... but also, if any thoughts come to mind from anything I post here, or if there is something that you like, and would like to see more of, or have criticism(s), comment(s), critique(s), anything - all is welcome here, but try not to be too inappropriate... there may be kids looking... not our fault, but still ;) just try... but not too hard...

This is all for now... until later ;)
